Jindřich Štreit studied photography at the Pedagogical Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc. He enjoyed documenting the rural life and people of Czech villages and loved the capture the everyday life events of these people. Eventually Streit changed the outlooks he had on photography when he started attending the Institute of Art Photography. He started to become interested in theatrical photography and he expanded his photography by taking pictures of peoples small village lives. He worked as a teacher in Rýmařov; later he became director of the school in Sovinec and Jiříkov. Streit took a portrait of the President of Czechoslovakia and he was convinced to release and publish it. He didn’t want to at first because he believed it would start problems. He was then accused of defamation of the President and the country, because of this he was sent to jail. When he was released he lived in Rýžoviště. Later in 2010 Streit became a teacher at Institut tvůrčí fotografie in Opava.
Jindrich work is amazing, it really captures what is going on in ones real life events. Streit uses black and white photography which makes the photo more dramatic and interesting. The black and white draws me into his work because it strengthens the emotion in the picture. His idea of photography is more to capture the moments in life. His photos are shot with emotion and many are candid shots. When looking at his photography you don’t know what is going on or what just occurred in the photo which makes you think deep into the photo.
In the first picture of the boy you can feel how he is alone and you can tell by the background that he comes from somewhere not very wealthy. In the second picture you can sense the child’s emotion of being tired and bored, while the baby seems comfortable with his mother. Even though the picture is black and white you still have an idea of the light and colors captured in the photo. The last picture is my favorite; it has dramatic lighting but is funny. The cat standing up gives the photo humorous emotion. I love how the light shines in through the window in the dark room to brighten it up.
Jindrich`s photo inspires me to take pictures with emotion and mystery. When creating my project I want to make the viewer’s feel what is going on in the photo the way Streit does in his work. The photos I will capture will be filled with emotion and candid shots. The photos will be captured in dramatic lighting with contrasts. In his work he expresses the contrasts between shadows and highlights which I would also like to do in my project. The emotion behind his pictures makes him one of the best photographers and I would love for my work to be like his.
